 COMBIVIR

Approved for use in HIV infection in combination with other antiviral drugs.

DESCRIPTION: Combivir is a tablet that contains two nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors, 3TC (150 mg) and AZT (300 mg).

DOSE: Adults / adolescents: One tablet, twice a day. Paediatric: Combivir should not be administered to children less than 12 years of age because it is a fixed-dose.

SIDE EFFECTS: No significant differences in side effects between lamivudine (3TC)/zidovudine (AZT) and either drug alone.

AZT Side Effects: Reversible bone-marrow toxicity (anaemia or leukopenia), fatigue, rash, severe muscle pain and inflammation (myopathy), nausea, insomnia, and headache.

3TC Side Effects: Headache, nausea, malaise and fatigue, nasal signs and symptoms, diarrhoea, neuropathy, neutropenia, and anaemia. Limited reports of alopecia, mania and increased agitation.

Enlarged fatty liver and lactic acidosis have been reported in patients taking nucleoside analogues.

INTERACTIONS: Using with ganciclovir, interferon-alpha, or other bone marrow-suppressive or cytotoxic agents may increase the toxicity of AZT. See AZT and 3TC .
